To: Pluto compilation now available online via Bandcamp

https://sedimentarts.bandcamp.com/releases

To: Pluto In July of 2015, the NASA satellite New Horizons imaged Pluto in an unprecedentedly close flyby. Mankind’s knowledge of what the Pluto system is will expand exponentially and yield exciting discoveries over the next days, months, and years. The fastest spacecraft ever launched, New Horizons has traveled more than nine years and three billion miles to reach its primary target. An entity of science fiction is being ushered into the realm of science, the mysterious is being made known, and another frontier is being surveyed. Will this be considered a "landmark" moment in history? What does this matter to us considering our current state of social and environmental affairs? Economic, racial, and personal inequality and injustice run rampant, wars continue to be waged, and this monumental achievement is steamrolled by normalcy.

In conjunction with the To: Pluto exhibition, Sediment is excited to release a curated collection of sound works and music that respond to the subject of the exhibition and the themes surrounding it. To address the time duration of the New Horizons’ flight from Earth to Pluto of 9 years, 5 months and 25 days, all tracks are 9 minutes, 5 seconds, and 25 milliseconds long.

Day Two: Saturday, October 22, 2 PM-Midnight - $5-15 (sliding scale)

There are times I worry I won't have enough to say about one of the shows in my column. Suffice it to say, this is not one of those times. If anything, Cheap Fest VI offers more action than I could possibly cover in a few measly paragraphs. This annual gathering of experimental music acts from all over the country is organized on some strict principles--each band gets 15 minutes in which to perform, and the music happens on a continuous basis for 10 hours each day for two days. During that time, something like 80 different groups take the stage, all assaulting the ears of listeners with a glorious wall of their own particular take on "noise"--which could involve a variety of musical instruments, or a pile of sound effects, or almost anything else you can think of. But it won't involve laptop computers being used to play back some prerecorded sounds, because laptops are strictly prohibited by Cheap Fest's charter. All noises you hear will be generated live and in the moment.

So what sort of noises can you expect? Well, the entire affair will be brought to a close by a set from Florida heroes the Laundryroom Squelchers, led by maniacal noise legend Rat Bastard. Meanwhile, day one's events will be wrapped up by a set from Daggering, a noise supergroup whose members once called Richmond home but are now scattered up and down the east coast. They return to action for a rare Richmond appearance in celebration of Bad Moon Rising, their brand new tape released by CNP Records earlier this month.

There are soooo many more performers on this bill, though. Groups that have attained a measure of local fame through legendary past performances (Drums Like Machine Guns, Clang Quartet), artists who once called RVA home and are back to blow minds once again (Narwhalz (of sound), Lugweight, Nu Depth, Scant), local up-and-comers just starting to make their mark on the Richmond scene (Alpha Decay, Schwarzkali Effect, Seven Hundred Club), RVA veterans doing what they do best (Mutwawa, Flesh Control, Coteries), and a ton of other local and out-of-town performers with plenty of awesomeness to bring you all. If you like your music to remain safe, calm, and totally normal, this isn't the event for you. I, for one, am down with the freakouts, and testing the limits of what sound can do; I hope you are too, and I hope you'll make an appearance at Strange Matter this weekend for Cheap Fest VI. You'll be glad you did.

AUXILIARY : ACTION #54

Friday, October 30 2015 at 6:30pm

GEN KEN & THE ENCHANTRESS OF BIOLUMINOSITY (NYC)

Gen Ken Montgomery (Generator Sound Art Inc) and Andrea Beeman (Crash Course In Science) Duo.

http://www.genkenmontgomery.com/
http://www.enchantressofbioluminosity.com/

"Ken Montgomery is a New York-based visual artist and "sound/composer" whose involvement in the cassette-culture and mail-art movements of the late seventies led to the creation, in 1989, of the first and arguably still the most important sound art gallery in New York City: Generator. Located first in the East Village and later in Chelsea, Generator's wide scope and novel approach toward audio art made it a vector-point for some of the most interesting and important artists from around the world...

Montgomery has collaborated with a wide variety of artists including Conrad Schnitzler, Andrea Beeman, David Lee Myers (Arcane Device), Zoe Beloff, Michael Zodorozny, and Ishtvan Kantor (a.k.a. Monty Cantsin)...

Montgomery's music has been released on the finest labels in the world - De Fabriek, Esplendor Geometrico, Staalplaat, Banned Productions, Firework Editions, XI Records, GD Stereo, Pogus, Tellus, Touch, XV Parowek, Generations Unlimited and Generator Sound Art."

"The Enchantress of Bioluminosity has always been captivated by synesthesia, a phenomenon where one type of artistic stimulation evokes another...Fireflies, jellyfish and dinoflagellates glow in the dark, enticing mates, luring their next meal, or sending defensive signals. The Enchantress of Bioluminosity merges the language of bioluminescence with the art of dance.

PSYCHIC TV BIO: PSYCHIC TV is a video art and music group that primarily performs psychedelic, electronic, punk and experimental music. The band was formed by performance artist Genesis P-Orridge and video director Peter Christopherson (after the break up of Throbbing Gristle) together with musician and producer Alex Fergusson (ex-Alternative TV). Christopherson left to form Coil with fellow PTV member John Balance around 1984, and Fergusson left in 1987, leaving P-Orridge in charge of a rotating band lineup.

Contributions to Psychic TV have included artists such as Coil, Current 93, Hafler Trio, The Cult, White Stains, Soft Cell, XKP, Master Musicians of Jajouka, Matthew Best, Daniel Simon Black, Bill Breeze, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, Derek Jarman, Fred Giannelli, John “Zoskia” Gosling, Timothy Leary, Rose McDowall, Stephen Kent, Vagina Dentata Organ, Andrew Weatherall, Z’EV, Zef Noi$e, and many others.

PTV can not be seen as regular band/group but more as a collective of musicans, artists, painters and others that made their contribution under the PTV umbrella. PTV had for many years their own record label Temple where they released music by PTV as well as Dave Ball (ex Soft Cell) and others. In many ways PTV followed in the same lane as Throbbing Gristle did, but did it into something more. The first years of PTV the music was experimental and sometimes noise. Later they changed their musical direction into electronica as well as techno.

LOCRIAN (Chicago IL/Relapse/Bloodlust!/Fan Death)

http://www.locrianband.com/

"In the dawn our monuments dissolved..."
LOCRIAN are prophetic voices of decline. The Chicago/Baltimore trio formed in 2005, as a duo of André Foisy (guitar) and Terence Hannum (keyboards/vocals). From their beginning they comfortably straddled both the experimental and metal underground. Urban decay, environmental destruction, birth/death/re-birth, and post-apocalyptic themes weave there way throughout their releases. In 2009, the group expanded to a trio with the inclusion of renowned experimental musician Steven Hess (drums/electronics), beginning with their critically acclaimed album The Crystal World for Utech Records, a breakthrough release for the band.

The group has released a number of critically acclaimed albums, collaborative albums, and EPs, that have been praised by Pitchfork Media, the Chicago Tribune, Spin Magazine, and numerous other publications.

In 2011, the group signed with Relapse Records, which brought the group’s work to a much wider audience beginning with the rerelease of The Clearing (originally released on Fan Death Records) & The Final Epoch 2xCD. In Summer 2012, the group recorded their Relapse Records debut Return to Annihilation, an album that Pitchfork writer Grayson Currin claimed is the group’s “most provocative and engaging Locrian album to date.”

$5 suggested donation and/or free with a material donation for The All-Nighters Artists. [Material lists from the artists are available on our website http://sedimentarts.org/THE-ALL-NIGHTERS-2015].

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

THE ALL-NIGHTERS is an evolving installation embracing iterative creative practice as a basis for communication and response. 4 artists each have a 72 hour work cycle at SEDIMENT, living and working in the gallery and overlapping with the following artist–inviting possibilities for collaboration. A 10ft x 10ft x 8ft three-walled structure built inside the gallery serves as the ultimate point of convergence for processing, arranging, and presenting the artists work. At the conclusion of the work cycles, the walled structure will be unveiled along with virtual documentation of the process. All-Nighters artists have supplied limited material-lists for the local Richmond community to donate. Ranging from raw materials to invitations for participation, the All-Nighters may use only the materials that the public has offered.
