[ratward summer camp 2003 activity notes]

The last few "shows" here have been really great! THANKS to all the performers and volunteers.THANKS to everyone for coming out and supporting the bands!

recent show reports:

-7-12-03-

EMILBEAULIEAU-PRURIENT-IMMACULATE:GROTESQUE-NO-FI-XXO'S-TO KILL A PETTY BOURGEOISIE.

After a few technical difficulties Richmond's TO KILL A PETTY BOURGEOISIE take the floor with some spastic audio cut-up's,blasts of noise rhythms, and suprise beats!
Up next (and just in time) was The XXO's from Chicago,a total now-wave psych-out rock jam.
NO-FI played next just to fill the schedule until... EMIL BEAULIAEU spun, scratched, twitched, tweaked, confused, and convulsed his way through a very lively set of heavy sound abuse."R...RR...RRR...RRRREY POOOOO he chanted,in his hands a phonograph record clearly affirming his mantra with bold white letters painted across the vinyl's black surface "REY POO".He dicates with his index finger motioning the audience to sing along..moments later the needle hits record,in the blaring waves of noise you can barely discern said phrase in the audio,or was it just our imaginations? After the performance one woman asks Emil "Rape Who?",he smirkingly replied "I never even thought of that".
More noise followed with a short, dense set of harshness from Providence,RI's IMMACULATE:GROTESQUE...lots of grinding destruction and guitar pedal abuse (literally!)
And finally a rather disturbing performance by PRURIENT.Piercing high-end feedback pulsating intensely, anxiously, building up into a sudden cathartic blast of pure self-destructive audio violence! His body flailing wildly...like a slam-dancing punker on fire! Mere seconds pass until everything came unplugged, ending the show.... then he quickly ran out of the building, the crowd cheering and screaming.

Day Three of Temple of Bon Matin's July 4th weekend mini tour! TEMPLE OF BON MATIN,BAYLIE'S BAND,RADIO ERIS,SUNTEARS ON THE HILL TOP,IGON,SEVENTH GATE,NO-FI.

First up was BAYLIE'S BAND bringing thier brand of wierdo jam-out noisy Boston area garage rock. Next thing you know I found myself in a daze, admiring the cleverly decorated instruments of TEMPLE OF BON MATIN as they were setting up.A gentle guitar melody quietly loops through the air, backed up by swirling synth sounds, like little helicopter leaves spinning to the ground. My concentration is broken by Leslie Q's voice shouting across the room at me as she donned her ratted-out pink bunny ears, she seems to like the four-eyed bunny tattoo idea i scrawled across her arm in black marker. The two drummers start to slowly brew the sounds together.A psychedelic orgy of music was underway, drawing us into it's lush world of colors and patterns, like a misanthropic lullabye.A mystic wave swells to crash your mind...watch the wreckage scatter into a tribalistic acid rock fury. Philly's RADIO ERIS were next.I missed it! Must've been a quiet set because I did'nt hear a thing. From what I was told they played some noise damaged folk music and poetry...like Patti Smith meets Whitehouse!? New Orleans own Jimmy Cousins took a brief time-out from his Pudhouse vacation to treat us to a most well timed SUNTEARS ON THE HILLTOP performance. He set up out on the rooftop and played his acoustic guitar as the sun set,and later he used a ukulele! Scheduled performers who could'nt make it: MARY KNOTT,FRED COLLINS,NUMBER and SCOTT BAILEY. So... why not the death metal sounds of northern VA's Seventh Gate? NO-FI played next,I don't want to review my own band you know. And then IGON finished the evening with thier heavy rock bastard sound.

-5-31-03-

MIX TAPE FOR ADRIAN-HAPPY SCRAPPY:HERO PUP-HORTUS-IGON-NO-FI.
VA Beach's Mix Tape for Adrian went on first...a smooth mix of electronic beats, samples and electric guitar.Follwed by the amazing synth-rock sounds of HAPPY SCRAPPY:HERO PUP,laser light show and fog machine included! Herbie Hancock would be most proud. Harm Stryker was scheduled to play, but had to leave early. HORTUS played a loud ugly set of bass and drum noisecore (not drum and bass noisecore!) They pummel us everytime! IGON played afterwards. Finally NO-FI come across with the usual noise antics,of course when No-fi play everyone clears the room,Party's Over!

The Artist

Here is a promiscuous examiner wrestling with time and time again. quell these thematic conumdrum humdrum doldrums and quiet the sophisticated philosophys of those snivelling liars called avant garde.

The asshole attitude isn't just a way to make you take me seriously.

God is in the details, not with a bang but a whimper mere anarchy is loosed upon the word.
(world)

I am that liar and my brain. i'd mistake it for passion but i'm just not that vain. I am that vein. the ladies come and go...you know the rest

i forgot what i's talkin about...oh yeah. Art.

Fuck Art.

After a long hot day of remote control air conditioning and pre-show ritualistic cleansing i think i'll blow some balloons and paint them on the ceiling for Siyi.

You didn't hear about Siyi?

Some little 3 year or so chinese girl that died alone in her apartment from dehydration and starvation after the chinese cops arrested her mom for shoplifting. The imperialist chinese believed in wiping out the bloodline of black sheep you know.

sad, so i decided that i should stick with balloons.

Water'd down purple sugar...Red and Blue and White and stickly sweet sunspot freckled smile.Every tiny gold hair on your face stands up to my attention, tickling my eyes! I squint and run,it's so hot out here...Happy 4th of July day!

So...let me get this straight...WE won OUR nation's independence from the American Indians or something, right?

My apathy isn't convincing.

Fireworks...another spectacle of dis-illusion.The crowd was too sated,if not scared..."Mommy!!! will it bite me!?" sometimes you can believe it just might."The cold-war is never over son." he said.

"every western holiday might as well be April Fool's day!"

Thursday, July 3, 2003

A fireworks factory explodes...What about that truck loaded with fireworks that blew-up the other day? "Is the EUGENICS COUNCIL gonna play at your fourth of july party or what!?"..... NOW listening to: "Noise-maker pomposity" by JULY4THTOILET...What!? You mean it's not the fouth of July yet? oh,who cares about the BIG GAME,I mean "War in Iraq"...or (Insert political statement here)! ..."from this day 4th we shall be a nation of sodomites" NEWS?

TEMPLE OF BON MATIN http://www.bulbrecords.com/tobm.html
..."they jam with such hard rock fervor that you are tempted to tag them
as space rock or jazzbo boogie. Then that jam reaches meltdown and bursts
into some propulsive free-roaming nebula charged with ionized something
or other and radioactive ass-quivering debris. This music is all so
incategorizable (word?!?) because of its ability to operate as either
head music or body music or both in some perpetually shifting ratio."...
- Justin Farrar

SCOTT BAILEY
"The juxtaposition of the natural, industrial, and technological
soundscapes. The sounds that you've been conditioned not to hear, and
the ones you will still never hear. Scott Bailey uses these to create an
absurb auditory experience.Bailey is currently in the projects PANDA,
Wurst Pudding, and an occasional member of KONX. He has CD-R's released
on Taking It There Records and Eyedrum Recordings, as well as being
involved since 2002 with the Eyedrum Monthly Improv in Atlanta, GA."
"...heavily epic and psychedelic excursions into a many faceted dimension
of sound". "PANDA is going for a journey, not an immediate
destination..." - Southeast Performer

BAYLIE'S BAND
"So it is with Baylies Band, a trio of New Bedford musicians who take
that hard-work-for-little-return ethic to stages up and down the
Northeast coast. It seems people can relate to the group's determination
and lack of posturing, even when it's filtered through a loud,
spontaneous foray into the cacophonous land of musical experimentation.
Think Metal Machine Music." -South Coast Today

MARY KNOTT
Self-described "all around crazy girl" Mary Knott seems to have all her
bases covered when it comes to bringing her art to the masses. Knott's
fourth issue of the self-published comic book, Pretty Beaver (which her
sister, Beppi illustrates) is almost ready for release while the duo's
monthly strip in New York Waste is in its fourth year. In addition the
Philadelphia Funny Paper has just picked up their Real Voodoo strip and
the pair's work has appeared in anthologies and fanzines such as Sunburn
and Stripburger. Somehow Knott has also found the time to release four
chapbooks of her writing, curate poetry readings and, when she catches
her breath, be the lead singer for the band the Dirt." -daily.net
